There are a lot of Mormon communities across the country, and most of them are self-reliant when it comes to food and water. Mormon communities tend to be extremely close and goal-oriented which allows them to work for the benefit of the entire community. What sets apart the Mormon community from other communities is that they are basically preppers, and all Mormon households do have emergency food stockpiles.
The most important things you need to know about Mormon canaries are that they are open to the public, you have to make an appointment, you can’t buy everything in bulk, they have several available canned products, and most foods are canned in #10 cans, Mormon canneries have different schedules, you can download the pricing list online, you can buy from the online Mormon cannery, and Mormon canneries often have sales.
If you want to stockpile a lot of canned foods then you should use a can rack, my personal recommendation is to use one which can hold up to 72 cans Click here to check it out on Amazon.com
Mormons are also known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, there are spread across the country and they supplement their community’s income with canneries. These Mormon canneries are both for their communities and for the general public as well. Mormon canneries tend to have fairly cheap canned foods for sale, and some of them you can also buy in bulk. The quality of their canned foods is considerably higher than the ones which you would buy from a local supermarket.

Mormon canneries tend to can foods that have a fairly long shelf life, so if you want to make a long-term emergency food stockpile then you should definitely try out their products. Most preppers who live near a Mormon cannery tend to buy their emergency food from Mormon canneries. The one drawback of Mormon canneries is that a lot of people tend to buy their food from them and if you are late to the party then you will not find a lot to buy. Mormon canneries are also known as Home Storage Centers.
The good news is that even if you do not live near a Mormon cannery you will still be able to buy some of their canned foods online. Buying them online will cost you a little bit more as you will also have to pay for shipping, so if you are on a tight budget make sure to also add the shipping costs to your budget. If you want to stockpile food for emergency situations, but you are on a tight budget then my personal recommendation is to check out my recent article How to stockpile food on a budget ( In 10 Easy Steps ).
Mormon Cannery
A Mormon cannery, also known as a Home Storage Center, is a facility operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) that provides resources and support for individuals and families to store and preserve food. These canneries are typically volunteer-run and offer a variety of food items, including grains, legumes, dried fruits, and other essential staples, in bulk quantities.
The goal of the Mormon cannery is to promote self-reliance and preparedness among its members and the community at large. People can bring their own containers or purchase pre-packaged items to assemble their food storage supply. The cannery provides equipment and guidance for canning and packaging food, allowing individuals to preserve their own food for long-term storage.

LDS Canneries Are Open To The Public
There is a big misconception that only members of the LDS can buy from Mormon canneries, this is absolutely false. Mormon canneries are open to the public, and anybody can buy from them. The Mormon community is almost like a prepper community, and they encourage others to start prepping as well. The only time when Mormon canneries are not opened to the public is when they have limited supplies, and they will rather focus on providing canned goods to their community than making a profit.
LDS canneries are not open to the public every weekday, and this is why some people think that they do not sell to the public. Although LDS canneries are not like your average shop, as they do not store a lot of products in their warehouses. You Need To Make An Appointment To Go To A Mormon Cannery
You will need to make an appointment to go to some Mormon canneries, although not all of them have this requirement. The main reason why you need to make an appointment is that a lot of people want to buy from these canneries, so in order to avoid big crowds they set up this rule. In addition to this, it is also a precautionary measure during recent global events. You can easily find the contact details online for any Mormon cannery, so give them a call and make an appointment.
You Can’t Buy Everything In Bulk At A Mormon Cannery
Depending on when you want to buy food in bulk from Mormon canneries you might find that you are not able to buy some items in bulk. This is mostly due to supply, and they do not want one person to buy up everything and this is why they are limiting bulk orders only for certain canned foods. So if you are planning to buy in bulk from them make sure to call them before and ask them if you do have the ability to buy in bulk.
For the most part, you will be able to buy bulk onions, black beans, white beans, refried beans, and carrots. If you store a lot of flour then you might find that if you didn’t store the flour correctly weevils will start appearing, for more information check out my recent article Weevils in flour safe to eat? ( 3 Step Removal ).

Most Foods Are Packed In #10 Cans At The Mormon Cannery
For the most part, the vast majority of their canned foods are in #10 cans, these are fairly large and meant for long term storage. They do also offer some items in pouches, but if you have a food pantry then you should probably go with the ones packed in #10 cans. The #10 cans can be easily stacked upon each other, and they are also rodent-proof as long as they do not rust, pouches do not offer rodent protection and it will be difficult to stack them upon each other. If you have a lot of sprouted potatoes then you can still use them, for more information check out my recent article What to do with sprouted potatoes? ( Top 8 Uses ).
Mormon Cannery Schedules
As I have previously mentioned Mormon canneries are not opened every weekday, some are open 3-4 days a week while others are open only one day a week. The schedule of a Mormon cannery will depend on a lot of factors, and this is why it is important to make an appointment. You can find the schedule of every Mormon cannery online, just make sure to call them as sometimes their schedule changes and it is not updated on the site.
Get The Pricing List Of The Mormon Cannery
Mormon canneries have more or less the same prices across the country, and the best part about this is if you are on a tight budget then you can easily calculate how much the canned goods will cost you. Do note that prices may vary from one location to another, due to several factors, like the higher cost of living, taxes, availability of products, and so on. But generally speaking, the prices will be more or less the same across all Mormon canneries.
The pricing list is also frequently updated so you will not find big differences between the pricing list which you have downloaded and the one which you will find at your local Mormon cannery. Online Mormon Cannery
If you do not live near a Mormon cannery then you can still buy canned food from them through their online shop. The online shop is a little bit more expensive than if you would go to a Home Storage Center but this is normal as the shipping cost has to be included as well. On the other hand, you will still be able to buy canned food in bulk for a lot cheaper than you would from a supermarket.
Even if you have a Home Storage Center nearby, you should always check the online store, as you will find that a lot of items in the online store can not be found in the Home Storage Centers.
Mormon Cannery Sales
A lot of Mormon canneries will have sales from time to time, and generally speaking these sales last for around a month and only until supply lasts. For the most part, a lot of people tend to buy bulk during a sale and you might find that the items are not available anymore only after a couple of days. If you have a Mormon cannery near you and you know that they are having some items on sale then make sure to make an appointment, or simply buy online.
Mormon Canneries Use Products That Can Cause Allergic Reactions
Mormon canneries pack their cans in facilities where wheat, soy, coconut, milk, and almonds are often processed and used. This means that during packaging some items could be contaminated with wheat, soy, coconut, milk, and almonds. So if you are allergic to one of these things or one of your family members is then you have to keep this in mind. Cross-contamination is normal in the food industry, and you will have a hard time finding canned foods that have zero chance of being cross-contaminated.
